Los Altos is one of the two main tequila producing regions in the state of Jalisco, the other being the municipality of Tequila, Jalisco. It is estimated that the majority of the population here is of 80.00-90.00% European. With backgrounds consisting mainly of Spanish, French, Italian, German, Basque, and others.〔:es:Altos_de_Jalisco}}〕 Since 1996, Los Altos has been organized administratively by the state of Jalisco into two regions, Altos Norte (North Altos) and Altos Sur (South Altos). Altos Norte has eight municipalities: Villa Hidalgo, Unión de San Antonio, Teocaltiche, San Juan de los Lagos, San Diego de Alejandría, Ojuelos de Jalisco, Lagos de Moreno and Encarnación de Díaz.
